Do you know the fastest way to build a profitable business?
You might think it’s to follow the market and look for opportunities to fill. Or you might think it’s to focus on what you’re most passionate about.
But opportunity and passion aren’t enough on which to build a business.
The real key to getting fast and sustainable results, is to leverage your strengths. What are the strengths, skills and experiences that you bring to the table? And how will you use those to create a valuable solution that people are looking for, and willing and able to pay for?
That is the secret starting point to find your niche, and build a profitable business you love!
Let’s use an example to make this crystal clear. As you know, there is a big and growing demand for help with weight loss.
And say you have recently lost a lot of weight yourself and are passionate about helping others do the same. While your personal story is empowering and it gives you credibility, prospective clients want to know that you can help them get results. What is the solution you will use to help them lose weight?
Don’t confuse “solutions” with “results”. Losing weight is the result, but you also need a clear solution that delivers that result.
Your prospective clients want to know that you have a clear solution or system in place that will show them, step-by-step, how you’re going to help them get the results they want. This is what we call a Signature System.
I’m going to tell you a secret. When you leverage your strengths and experiences, creating a Signature System flows right out of you.
I have a client who struggled with her Signature System. Let’s call her Alice. She was so passionate about helping a particular target market. She knew who she wanted to help and what result she wanted to help them achieve. But when she sat down to flesh out her signature system and identify how she would help her clients get those results, she was totally stumped.
Because while her passion was there and she had her own personal story, she didn’t have the skills and experiences in this niche to create a system to help others.
In working together, Alice decided to shift gears and move into a niche for which she had both a passion and experience. When she sat down to write out her Signature System, it flowed like water.
The bottom line is that passion and opportunity aren’t enough on which to build a niche or your business. You also need to look at your own strengths, skills and experiences to back up what you want to do. When you bring those 5 elements together – passion, strengths, skills, experiences and opportunity – magic happens!

So true we must consider if we can offer the RESULTS our clients need, not just have the passion for it.
Cindy says
Absolutely Alyssa. Passion is great, but you need the strengths, skills and experiences to back them up. And if you’re really passionate about something, you’ll keep acquiring those things.

Great post. I too found this out the hard way. Experience is a hard teacher, but it gives lessons you’ll never forget!

So well put Cheryl. I heard a quote the other day… I”m paraphrasing… Sometimes the fastest results come by doing the easiest things first. Thanks for sharing!
