One of the questions I get asked a lot is “When should I choose a coaching niche?”
You may resist choosing a coaching niche because you want to help different people with different things, and you know that your coaching skills can be applied to virtually any type of person or situation.
You may also resist choosing a coaching niche because you’re afraid of limiting yourself or of choosing the wrong niche.
Or you may feel that you don’t need a coaching niche to build a successful coaching business, or it’s too early to choose a coaching niche.
I promise you that a shotgun approach will not get you the results you want. Nor will jumping around from one niche to another. I have met coaches and consultants who have spent months and even years without a clear niche. In many cases, they had difficulty attracting their ideal clients and struggled financially.
Here are some of the biggest benefits you’ll gain with a clear coaching niche.
- Easier to become an expert – When you have a clear niche, you don’t have to become an expert on everything. People like to do business with experts, and as an expert you stand out and can command higher fees.
- Focus your marketing – You need to focus your marketing to where your target market hangs out. If you don’t know who you’re targeting, you can’t do that.
- Speak their language – You have to speak directly to your target market, addressing their concerns and challenges. You want your target market to feel as though you are speaking directly to them!
- Get more referrals – If people don’t know who you help or what you help them with, then you’re not going to get the kind of referrals you want.
- Build a list – Your email list is the lifeblood of your business. But you don’t just want to build a big list, you want to build a targeted list. You want people in your target market to opt-in to your list, because they are the ones who are most likely to buy from you and work with you.
- Attract joint venture partners – Joint Ventures are a really fast and effective way to build your list and your business. A good joint venture partner is one who serves the same target market but with a complementary solution. If you don’t know who you serve and what your solution is, you won’t be attractive to joint venture partners.
- Earn more income -f you want to earn leveraged or passive income, then you absolutely need a clear niche. Imagine creating a group coaching program for instance where you help everyone with everything. It will be very hard to fill. The same problem will happen if you try to sell home study programs, membership programs, etc without a clear niche.
The bottom line is that if you don’t have a clear coaching niche, you will make your marketing much harder than it needs to be and limit your income potential.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Spend the time up-front to get your foundation in place before you start spending time, money and energy on marketing.

Cindy, this is such a great post. I love how you simplify why it’s critical to choose a niche. I have seen many business owners fail because they were afraid to narrow their focus. I believe the key to marketing success is refining and narrowing our focus so that the people who need what we offer can easily find us.

Well said Minette! I love helping people with their niche, because it truly is the #1 thing that determines your success (and how easy your marketing efforts will be)

I really like that: “Your niche isn’t something that limits you. It’s something that helps focus you.”
Thanks! This and branding are something that I am continually working on.

Hi Cindy
How many times have I asked people ‘who is your target market?’
You can guess the answer – ‘everyone’
So many business owners believe they are narrowing their opportunities by selecting a niche and yet the reverse is true.
Thanks for a great post

Exactly Sue! It’s not just about being targeted and effective with your marketing. It’s also about doing the work you love with the people you love to work with.
This is your business and you deserve to do what lights you up, plays to your strengths and allows you to work with the people who you really enjoy working with. That’s the real power of a niche!
