If there’s one thing just about every entrepreneur can relate to it is the big “O” – Overwhelm!
You know the feeling. So much information, ideas and opportunities rushing through your brain that you feel like your head will explode.
In order to stop the overwhelm, the first thing you need to do is diagnose the reasons for your own particular case of overwhelm. Review the following causes of overwhelm and be really honest about which ones apply to you:
-
- Unclear about the vision for your business
- Too many creative ideas
- Lack the necessary skills
- Lack the resources you need
- Over-complicate or over-analyze things
- Over-learn and get stuck in “analysis paralysis
Then ask yourself, where are you stuck now? Do any of the information products or resources address that particular challenge? If so, then dive into learning it and applying it to your business. In other words, take action on what you’re learning. If you need help implementing what you’ve learned, then find a mentor or coach who can guide you.
Marketing is a big world, so drill down further and look at where your marketing is broken.
- Do you not have enough traffic coming to your website? Then you need to focus on driving that traffic.
- Do you have good traffic coming to your website but a very small list? Chances are, you don’t have a valuable giveaway that inspires people to opt-in to your list or you aren’t using the right messaging to communicate the value of that giveaway, or you’re not displaying the giveaway in the right way.
- Do you have a list but aren’t making any money? Then you need to look at how you build relationships with the people on your list and your monetization strategy.
The bottom line is that you need to figure out where things are broken for you. Then get the training and support you need to overcome those specific challenges. Stay focused and take targeted action on what you learn without getting distracted.
Be sure to leave a comment below on the kind of overwhelm you face in your business. Thanks!

Cindy, great breakdown of the problem. I think my opt-in is not enticing enough but I really can’t think of what else to do. I’ve considered offering a raffle ticket to a painting but not sure that would work. I had very little traffic too and I think there’s a solution to that, but I never get around to doing it…I mean, I’m going to do it this week darn it! I have increased my traffic a lot in the last couple weeks, but hasn’t led to many opt ins…I definitely love learning and over analyze….

Carol – I took a quick look at your site and your art is absolutely beautiful!
Here are a few things come to mind:
1. Make sure your opt-in is on every page of your site. It’s not on your home page and this is the #1 place it should be
2. Think about what would be valuable as a giveaway for your target market. I’m not sure who your target market is, but you need to know that before you can create a valuable giveaway.
3. Think about what you want people to do once they’re on your list. Do you want them to buy a piece of art, come to an art class, etc?
I hope this helps!
warm wishes,
Cindy

Guess my overwhelm is trying to take in too much information and not being able to use it. Finding a niche may be just what I need right now. I am a new business start up so everything is overwhelm 🙂
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Cindy,
What I am experiencing is the inability to stay focused. But in reading through your site I am getting a better understanding of what I really need to focus on. I really like the way you break things down into manageable steps that seem simple to do. I feel that this can help with staying focus and not jumping at every shiny new object. Thank you so much for making it simple.

That is a huge one DTaRelle, for so many people.I’m so glad you’re finding value in what I share to help you focus. And I appreciate your kind feedback about my breaking things down into manageable, bite sized pieces. That is one of my strengths:) And as you know, the fastest way to build a profitable business is by leveraging your unique strengths!
Thanks and warm wishes,
Cindy

Hey Cindy – I noticed your blog at the Ultimate Blog Challenge facebook page just after I had posted “My head is about to explode!!! Cuppa tea and bed me thinks…” – I was feeling so overwhelmed – and there was your blog post.
I think I know now what I have to do – I have so much going on in my head all the time of things I want to do this year. I guess that’s what we do in January. I haven’t written any down though and I now can’t think straight at all or do anything…. I think my brain thinks i need to do it all now and forgets I have 350 days to go in this year.
This happens a lot to me. I love being busy but end up paralyzed and not being able to do a thing. I have ADHD so organising my thoughts and time are a bit of a tricky task but I need to find a way to manage it if I am to achieve even one thing I want to this year. I don’t want to see another year zip past in a blink.
Thank you for your post!

You’re so welcome Tracy. I’m glad that you found the post. If you haven’t already done so, I really encourage you to start working with a coach. I know that feeling oh so well of having a million ideas and plans, and they’re zipping all around your head. You need to bounce things off of someone who has the experience and insight to help you prioritize and focus. Otherwise, you’re right. Time zips by and we stay stuck.
I hope that helps Tracy. Keep me posted!
