The terms “niche market” and “target market” are often used interchangeably. Knowing the difference between niche definition and target market definition is not just a matter of semantics — it is crucial to your business success.
A target market is the group of people to whom your product is being marketed — WHO
A niche adds another dimension. A niche combines your target market — WHO — with WHAT you are helping them with.
Niche = Target Market (WHO) + Your Solution (WHAT)
When you put these 2 pieces together – your WHAT and your WHO – you have a clear coaching niche that makes marketing so much easier.
You’ll be able to write copy (on your website, emails, landing pages, etc.) that speaks directly to your ideal client. You can create programs that are tailored to what they’re looking for.
Let’s look at an example.
Say you’re a life coach. Many life coaches are far too broad. They say something like, they help women going through a transition create the life of their dreams.
What’s the transition and who are these women?
I understand you CAN help all of them, but if you try and help everyone with everything, you’re seen as a generalist vs. the expert that you are.
So how do you drill things down?
A lot of people will tell you to choose a target market and figure out what they want. I take a different approach.
You come to your business with unique strengths and experiences. Why not leverage what you bring to the table, in a way that you’re passionate about?
Then you can build your business from a place of confidence and passion.

Hi Cindy, I’ve never seen a Niche defined so succinctly, and it makes sense when defined like that. Most internet marketers talk about a niche as being a subset of a market (different from target market). So, for example if a “market” is all mobile devices, then a “niche” could be an Ipod.
Thanks Cindy, I like your definition of niche much better!

Thanks Julieanne! Understanding what a niche is, and answering the 3 “W’s” is the first step toward finding your ideal niche. All the best,
Cindy
